Summerall Custom Construction

Home Sweet Home
The Summerall Way

Summerall Custom Construction is known for its standard of excellence. Lesser known is the “less is more” secret behind the standard. Focusing on fewer projects – sometimes “one by one” – enables Summerall to deliver more. This standard also makes “custom” their well-earned middle name.

Behind the name and the theory is Owner and Proprietor David Summerall. Asked what inspired the raised bar approach Summerall says he’d watch a home go through the punch-list process and think, “There has to be a better way to do this.” There is. It’s the “Summerall way”.

One by One
“If you’re doing too much work at once,” says Summerall, “no one gets the full attention that they deserve. The way we do it – everyone does.” Better yet, they get the owner’s full attention. “By focusing on only a couple jobs at a time, I’m therefore able to see them through personally every step of the way,” Summerall explains. This is a philosophy that extends to the entire team.

Summerall works with “one representative from every trade” – one plumber, one electrician, one sheetrocker, one painter and so on. Essentially, a team of experts assembled to craft your custom home.
Summerall Custom Construction also stays custom by raising homes primarily “one by one.” Summerall says, “Our rule is: we’re not doing foundation or framing for more than one house at a time. When we’re finished with that, then we can start another. The timeframe is: As much time as it takes to do it correctly.”

Asked if this limits the amount of business they’re able to take on, the answer is yes and no – while scheduling abilities are limited to assure build exclusivity, knowing you’re receiving a promise of unique excellence has proven a successful philosophy for growing the company.

Building it Better
Any consumer who has been through the homebuilding process and conducted their own fix-it tour with painter’s tape in hand, has asked themselves at least once how some things can be overlooked and how a builder can walk away from obvious errors or material flaws calling it good enough or hoping that the homeowner would not catch it. That traditional walk-through, blue-tape, punch-list step is, as David puts it, “Not a real thing that happens with us. I punch out everything myself before the list can even be made.”

Sounding nearly appalled to think it’s customarily something the homeowner has to do to make sure the build is polished, Summerall explains the company’s trade approach to perfection: “I’m committed to getting it right no matter what – it doesn’t matter if I have to recut and lose a cost, or whose fault it was, right is right. If a trim cut is bad, we simply re-do it, not try to fix it. It’s either right or it’s wrong – and if it is wrong we make it right.”
That’s the Summerall way, and the Summerall difference in the final product. “Where it means schedules run a little tighter in the short term, the longer-term result is a system, rather than a paste and patch nightmare, of delivering homes that are long-lasting, energy efficient, and simply look better. Every subsequent house we build is better than the last because we learn something new every time.”

Summerall’s approach is, “direct, thorough, and as quick as is reasonable without rushing.” Not only is there no such thing as corner cutting in Summerall Custom Construction, there’s no excuse for not corner-perfecting. It’s an approach that is not only adopted by Summerall’s team, but one they take personally. David explains, “Every home we build is a representation of myself and I don’t turn it over until I am happy with every component.”

Summerall, by Name
Team effort credited, every element of this commitment to excellence still points back not just to the company standard, but the owner himself. For David Summerall it’s personal and uncompromisable.

Summerall doesn’t sign off on a build until it is up to his personal standard and level of finish. “Punch lists come from me before the owner is involved, and my standards supersede the homeowners’ every time.”

Owners who work with Summerall Custom Construction get David Summerall from start to finish. The owner is their sole contact, which removes many of the conventional middleman or lack-of-ownership pitfalls.

“Anywhere I am, at any given time, I’m making sure that everything is right.” That’s a promise David Summerall can put his name on, and has, building “every house better” one home sweet home, at a time.
