Family Night Out In Habersham

Berto’s Tex-Mex Grill and Sunset Slush-Classic Italian Ice, Habersham Marketplace denizens, have been pleasing palates (collectively) for 20 years. With the warmth of spring and outdoor play in full swing, these neighbors are gearing up for a delectable season. When it’s time for dinner and dessert with the family, Habersham is a one-stop shop!

Howard and Julie Hook

SUNSET SLUSH
Howard Hook started to scoop in 2013 and can be seen with his carts all around Beaufort, from the Waterfront Park to the Y, and everywhere in between. He makes the party circuit at birthdays, graduations, corporate events, and even a wedding or two! His basecamp is right here in Habersham, where he’s always ready with his signature Koozies filled with flavors like Blue Raspberry, Pina Colada, and Cinnamon Red Hots.

Prior to joining the ‘ice capades,’ Howard worked in the Quality Engineering industry in Indiana for over 30 years. He and his wife, Julie, moved to Beaufort with a Sunset Slush franchise in mind, and it was just a couple of months before he was up and running. His Habersham shop and his cart service are a family affair: a partnership with his son John and daughter-in-law Tiffany and his brother John and his wife, Brenda.

The Sunset Slush company has over ninety franchise locations throughout the South and Midwest. The founders pride themselves on small-town community values with their emphasis on local charitable giving.

Stop by Habersham for a cool treat Thursday to Sunday from 3-7 p.m., and when the school year ends in May, you’ll find Howard here at the shop daily and the park downtown Thursday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. If you can’t wait, he’s there on Saturdays and Sundays now.

BERTO’S TEX-MEX GRILL
Lovers of Tex Mex and those in the know—know one thing: nothing beats a batch of guac created right at your table. One rarely sees a plate left uneaten at Berto’s. The ambiance at this indoor/outdoor establishment invites you to sit and stay awhile, have another round of margaritas, and enjoy the scenery of the marketplace.

Wednesdays and Saturdays are burger nights, and there’s live music every Thursday, courtesy of local musician Dr. Paul Longo.

Long-time locals may remember Berto from his first spot on Boundary Street. He moved to Habersham in 2009, much to the delight of his loyal fans from Habersham and the Burton area. His outdoor patio is quiet and charming, perfect for a long luncheon under the historic live oaks.

Berto is famous for his tortillas and burritos, and for the generous portions that he proudly plates. Having moved up in the ranks to head chef at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in New Jersey, Berto and his family moved South, where he opened his first Taqueria in Shell Point. Satisfied diners are his highest priority. It comes through in his extensive, authentic menus and his winning smile.

With his family by his side Norberto Jr, Tania, Gabi and Iris, Berto sets the perfect example of Southern hospitality.
