Boil for Bowls

RIVERVIEW CHARTER SCHOOL UNITES TO FIGHT HUNGER NEAR AND FAR
Celebrating the Empty Bowls Service Learning Project and a New Fundraiser Fueling 50,000+ Meals Worldwide

Each fall, Riverview Charter School comes together around a tradition that is as meaningful as it is impactful — our Empty Bowls Service Learning Project. From kindergarten through 8th grade, students dive into hands-on learning about food insecurity, both in our own community and across the globe. At each grade level, students explore the concept of global food insecurity from different perspectives that integrate with their curriculum. For example, as part of their research on elements in chemistry class, seventh graders conduct a nutritional analysis of the vitamins and minerals in their favorite meal and compare that to the composition of the rice and soy meal that they will pack during the Rise Against Hunger event.

Locally, we partner with HELP of Beaufort to collect essential food items for neighbors in need. With our global partner, Rise Against Hunger, we work side by side to pack 50,000 meals that will be shipped to communities experiencing hunger around the world. Since the project began, Riverview students have helped pack more than 500,000 meals, which is a true testament to the power of collective action and service learning.

To continue this work, our school must raise $25,000 each year. This fall, we are excited to introduce a new, adults-only event to help us reach that goal: Boil for Bowls. Guests will enjoy live music from The Cluster Shucks, a Lowcountry Boil catered by LowCo on the Go, and an open bar. Sponsorships and tickets are still available, and all proceeds will help fund this year’s meal-packing event. Please contact Haley Romeo (haley.romeo@riverviewcharterschool.org) if you are interested in sponsoring.
With the addition of the Boil for Bowls event, we are hopeful the funds raised through our schoolwide Silent Auction during Portfolio Night can directly support Riverview programs, meaning this project not only nourishes communities far and near, but also strengthens our own.

At Riverview, we believe in the power of service learning! We rise by lifting others.
