USCB Center for the Arts in partnership with South Carolina Artisan Center
Announces New Exhibit
The Rhodes Collection
The University of South Carolina Beaufort Center for the Arts and the South Carolina Artisan Center are proud to announce a new exhibit of African American Art collected by Dr. and Mrs. Harold M. Rhodes III. The exhibit will be on display from Friday, March 28 – Monday, June 30 at USCB Center for the Arts in historic Downtown Beaufort.
Although their collecting began in 1991, Dr. Rhodes explains that his interest in art has followed him all his life. “To me, art ignites the imagination and influences the decisions we make…. It affects each one of us differently, and that is the beauty of art,” says Dr. Rhodes.
The Rhodes Collection includes work by such prominent artists as Arianne King Comer, James Denmark, Tom Feelings, Tyrone Geter, Jonathan Green, Philip Simmons and Leo Twiggs that will fill our galleries.
The artists represented are either native to or spent a significant time in their career working in South Carolina. The selections from the Rhodes Collection range from paintings and sculpture to quilts, batiks, and collage, and are representative of the black Carolinian experience.
Other lectures and events have been planned during the exhibition dates. For more information go to the website uscbcenterforthearts.com or contact bhargov@uscb.edu.
