Summit Place of Beaufort is a beautiful assisted living and Alzheimer’s care retirement community in Beaufort, South Carolina, located among the mossy oak trees and gentle river breeze of Beaufort. Summit Place of Beaufort is owned by Five Star Senior Living – a national healthcare senior living provider. Shazia Arroyo is the Bridge to Rediscovery Memory Care Director at Summit Place. A longtime member of the Five Star Senior Living family, Shazia Arroyo has a passion for exceptional care.

Prior to joining the Summit Place team, Shazia served as Executive Director, Assistant Resident Services Director, and Memory Care Director at three Virginia Five Star Senior Living communities. With a Master’s in Healthcare Administration, Shazia has dedicated the past 15 years to bringing joy to the lives of her senior neighbors. At Summit Place, she is helping the residents rediscover the joy in every day.

Bridge to Rediscovery is an innovative approach that helps those with Alzheimer’s rediscover the joy in everyday life. Bridge to Rediscovery is a special place within each Five Star Senior Living memory care community, uniquely designed to meet the needs of their residents with Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory impairment. Residents enjoy the comfortable feeling of home, combined with the support and security they need.

Program Goals:

• Engage the resident within their environment
• Provide an atmosphere of acceptance
• Provide activities with a clear objective that is meaningful to the resident
• Create unique activities for each resident
• Encourage families to learn, add to the program, & discover more meaningful visits
• Enable the resident to interact positively and reach their highest potential

Bridge to Rediscovery celebrates the spirit within each resident through personalized activities that encourage creativity and self-expression. They work with residents individually, striving for small successes that help create a sense of accomplishment. Everyone wants to feel valued, and
to be able to contribute to the people and world around them. We help residents discover what that contribution can be today, with the strengths and abilities they have now. If a resident loves to garden, he or she can plant vegetables and flowers in the courtyard or grow an indoor plant. If someone was a teacher, they might teach a new game they’ve learned to a fellow resident.

In some cases, residents may even be able to relearn a portion of the skills they have lost. Simple activities like scooping beans into a pail, for example, may help a resident re-learn to use a spoon to eat soup. Instead of being defined by their disease, our residents are celebrated for who they are – artists, doctors, mothers, and fathers – and who they will always be.  The activities and philosophy of the Bridge to Rediscovery
program were inspired by the Montessori-style approach to education used throughout the world to help children succeed.

Summit Place of Beaufort is proud to have been awarded the Assisted Living Federation of America’s (ALFA) “Best of the Best” Award for their Bridge to Rediscovery program.
