1635 on the Avenue, owned by Lorett Hayes, first opened their doors nearly four years ago.  Lorett is no stranger in the restaurant business.  Her resume includes four successful ventures in the upstate, including owning and operating a bed and breakfast which included, Café Leisure, a 65-seat dining room prior to “retiring” to Beaufort.  It wasn’t long after moving to Beaufort that Lorett realized her passion for food and sharing that passion with others was greater than a life of leisure.
Lorett explains, “I became a chef by accident.” She continued about her path saying, “I was blessed, and in my thirties, I realized I had something that people wanted, a love for cooking.” Lorett could not be more accurate as locals pour into 1635 On The Avenue day after day to experience that passion for cooking that leaves everyone craving more after each visit.
“Our menu reflects a love for spice with some creole dishes, but we also offer comfort foods like buttermilk friend chicken and Italian style meatloaf. We believe we serve the best Escargot and Mussels in the area. Our shrimp and grits are a big hit for those who have tried them,” says Lorett.
Plan to begin your experience at 1635 On The Avenue with one of Lorett’s incredible starters, from the Escargot served with crusty bread to Steamed Mussels. While enjoying your starters, your senses are captivated with the continuous aromas of her delicious entrees such as the Crab cakes or the Black and Bleu Pasta. Even Lorett’s Catfish with a creolo gravy on smoked gouda grits provides a unique and unforgettable experience for one’s pallet. Lorett then plates each creation to absolute perfection tying the entire experience together, remarking, “I believe we eat with our eyes first.”
Lorett still takes the time to leave her kitchen to meet and greet her guests. If there is anything she loves more than cooking, it is connecting with people who share in her passion. “I actually love the restaurant business and not just the bottom line,” she comments. What matters most to her is that “people feel like they actually had an experience and it was a pleasure,” adds Lorett.
“We thank our loyal customers who have helped us become a success as we are approaching our fourth year here in Port Royal,” says Lorett with a humble and thankful tone. Their customer base stretches from Fripp island, Dataw Island, Callawassie, Spring Island to the locals of Beaufort and Port Royal.
